When your legs disrupt your sleep, pinpointing the exact cause can be challenging. Two common issues—Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) and night leg cramps—can feel similar at first, but they have different causes and require different treatments. Recognizing the unique symptoms of each is the first step toward finding lasting relief and improving your quality of rest.
At Vein911 Vein Treatment Centers, we don’t just treat vein disease; we redefine how it’s understood, blending award-winning care with a patient-centered approach that prioritizes compassion and innovation. Whether your restless legs stem from chronic venous insufficiency or another vein issue, our world-renowned team, led by triple board-certified Dr. Chris Pittman, is here to help you feel great again.
What Is Restless Leg Syndrome?
Restless Leg Syndrome is when the legs move uncontrollably, often accompanied by tingling, crawling, or pulling sensations. Symptoms are usually worse during periods of rest, especially in the evening or at night. Moving the legs offers temporary relief, which is why many people with RLS find themselves pacing or stretching late into the night.
The cause of RLS isn’t always clear, but it’s often linked to iron deficiency, pregnancy, nerve disorders, or chronic venous insufficiency (a vein issue where blood pools in the legs).
What Are Night Leg Cramps?
In contrast, night leg cramps are sudden, involuntary muscle contractions, often affecting the calves or feet. These cramps can last from a few seconds to several minutes and can be extremely painful. Unlike RLS, movement doesn’t help. Stretching the muscle or massaging the area is typically the most effective way to find relief.
Night leg cramps can be triggered by dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, prolonged sitting or standing, certain medications, or varicose veins. They’re also more common in older adults.
How to Tell the Difference
- Timing: Both occur at night, but RLS tends to start at rest and worsen as the evening progresses. Cramps often hit suddenly during sleep.
- Sensation: RLS causes an urge to move and a creeping sensation. Cramps cause sharp pain and tightness.
- Relief: Movement eases RLS. Stretching or massaging relieves cramps.
