Learn More About EVLT

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is an FDA-approved alternative to old-fashioned and less effective vein stripping surgery. Unlike vein stripping, this outpatient treatment is quick and practically pain-free, with most patients able to resume normal physical activity immediately after the procedure.

The EVLT procedure uses ultrasound to guide a thin laser fiber into the diseased vein to heat the vein wall. Heating the vein wall causes the vein to close, eliminating the abnormal backward flow of blood in the vein. Healthy veins around the closed vein restore normal flow of blood.  After a few weeks, symptoms from your varicose veins improve, and unsightly veins will shrink.

Before performing EVLT vein treatment, we will conduct a diagnostic ultrasound exam of your legs to help us develop your customized EVLT vein treatment plan.  A properly performed and interpreted ultrasound scan is a critical road map to achieving your best legs ever.

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is:

  • Quick — EVLT procedures take under an hour, resume normal activity immediately
  • Convenient – Performed in our office, no general anesthesia or hospitalization required
  • Effective — 98% success rate with immediate relief of symptoms
  • Invisible — No scars or stitches, since there are no incisions
  • Insured — Most insurance carriers cover EVLT vein treatments for symptom relief

What to expect from EVLT

A local anesthetic (numbing medicine) is applied to your leg, and then we enter your diseased vein with a tiny needle and insert a laser fiber. The laser heats the vein wall,  which shrinks and seals the damaged vein wall.  After the EVLT procedure, we recommend patients:

  • Wear compression hose for up to two weeks
  • Start walking immediately
  • Resume normal activities as soon as possible
  • Resume strenuous physical activities (if desired) such as high-impact aerobics and weightlifting after 72 hours

Some patients may experience minor soreness or bruising.  Any discomfort is easily treated with over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen.

Consultation

During your initial consultation, we will ask you some questions and examine your legs.  We’ll ask about any problems you may have with your legs such as pain, aching, swelling and restless legs.  We’ll also inquire about your medical history and the medications you take.

You will be checked for signs of more serious deeper vein problems, which are often indicated by swelling, skin changes or sores near the ankle.

Before performing any procedure, we will conduct an ultrasound exam of your legs to help us develop your customized treatment plan.
