Dealing with bulging veins or constant leg discomfort can be frustrating to live with, especially when it affects your daily routine. If you’re looking into treatment options, thermal ablation offers a safe, minimally invasive way to relieve symptoms and improve vein health. But what does this process entail? Here’s a look at what you can expect before, during, and after the procedure, so you feel prepared to take the next step.
At Vein911 Vein Treatment Centers, thermal ablation is delivered with a unique blend of compassion, innovation, and award-winning expertise. Led by Dr. Chris Pittman, a triple board-certified vein specialist recognized as a Tampa Magazine Top Doc four years in a row, you’ll experience our commitment to world-class care that’s as uplifting and efficient as it is effective.
Before the Procedure
You will begin with a comprehensive vein evaluation. If you’re a good candidate for thermal ablation, you’ll receive pre-procedure instructions, which may include avoiding certain medications, fasting, or wearing loose clothes on treatment day. Be sure to arrange transportation, as driving immediately after the procedure may not be advised.
During the Procedure
Thermal ablation is typically performed in-office and takes about 30-60 minutes. After numbing the area with local anesthesia, you’ll lie comfortably while your provider uses ultrasound to guide the insertion of a thin catheter into the vein. Heat is delivered through the catheter to seal the vein shut.
The process is typically well-tolerated, with minimal discomfort thanks to the local anesthesia. You’ll be awake the entire time and may even walk out immediately after the procedure.
After the Procedure
Recovery is usually quick. You should walk immediately and resume light activities the same day. Wear compression stockings as directed, typically for a week or more, to reduce swelling and promote healing.
Some mild bruising, tightness, or a pulling sensation along the treated vein is normal and should subside within a few days. Strenuous exercise, hot baths, and long periods of sitting or standing may be restricted for a short time.
Treated veins may begin to fade within a few weeks, with continued improvement in the appearance of your legs over the next few months as your body naturally absorbs the closed veins.
