The numbers are \u201ca redundant way to uniquely and safely identify the patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Medical facilities also often say they need the numbers in case a patient dies; the number is required for the death certificate. But some security experts say this need can be addressed by providing contact information for a family member who has access to the patient\u2019s Social Security number.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers are also used for collecting payments. \u201cIs medicine a business? Well, certainly,\u201d Pittman said. \u201cAre there other ways to find people who don\u2019t pay their bills? Based on my research, there are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatients can say, \u2018I\u2019m not going to give my Social,\u2019\u201d Pittman said. \u201cAn entity can say, \u2018Well fine.
